Have you ever seen #changemanagement used for evil? To give people a false sense of input into a foregone conclusion? My session at Australasian Change Days #acdc2021 will explore this. When you are backed into this kind of corner, what wriggle room can you find?
Here’s this week’s collection of my articles, links, and other updates.
This newsletter is hand-compiled with links that Revue pulls from my tweets (though it doesn’t quite provide the full stream), my blogs — www.chose-path.org, www.syscoi.com, www.govtransformation.org, and also content at www.publicservicetransformation.org — and anything I manually pull in. It seems to be a good system. I’d welcome feedback!
What are we offering the world? Imagine a chimp in a cage. In this cage is a banana on top of a large shelf, out of reach for the chimp. However, there is…
A little later than usual this week. I’d welcome feedback on how you are finding these newsletters!

This week I had:
Only a quarter of people celebrating outright, only one in five completely condemning the opening up.
A clear majority seem somewhere in between — they’re ‘not going to tear the pants out of it’. And 22 people feeling that they are now more vulnerable and isolated because there’s no longer a legal requirement for distancing and masks. This is a serious and underrated problem.
Meanwhile, the UK has close to the highest tested infection rates in the world, with proportions testing positive suggesting we are very much under-testing. …

It should be a lot of fun. Change in #complexity demands a dynamic and important tension between ‘tight’ and ‘loose’ which is not a natural tension for people to hold; this workshop will offer a way in, and very practical approaches, that sneak up on those dynamics by opening up about what definitely doesn’t work.

The past 18 months have been very very difficult for most of us all around the world, and in the UK, there have been many deaths, many more infections and many more people bereaved, many people who have lost their livelihoods, opportunities, life experiences.
And there has of course been an upside in working and living differently, as well as the substantial costs.
So this is an opportunity to reflect on what we value, and how we want to be.
Because, unfortunately, it’s another…
These are five *generous* practices — they work well for novices and sophisticates alike.
They are intentionally *practices*, not claims to excellence, ‘values’, or ‘principles’:
Imagine a chimp in a cage. In this cage is a banana on top of a large shelf, out of reach for the chimp. However, there is also a stick in the cage. Of course, the chimp will manage to get the banana using the stick.
To this story, von Foerster said: cybernetics is not about the banana.
Ask yourself — what am I offering my clients? As a consultant, as a company, as a trainer, as a teacher…
