Failure or success in UK public service leadership — the options are open

The challenges facing public service leaders are stark. Hospitals are full, NHS Trusts are in the red, and in the next two years I predict that a number of councils — hopefully a very small number — are going to ‘go bust’ for the first time ever . They will be unable to set a balanced budget. At the same time, some will make a ‘unilateral declaration of independence’ and become self-supporting and self-financing. Many, many more will be doomed to fight on, only just making it, only just surviving year after year.

What’s the difference between public services that will go broke or fail, and those that will continue to survive and adapt? Quite a lot — and it will depend on the quality of your leadership.
