Here are my five pre-conditions for organisational success — which one speaks to you the most?

In conditions of #complexity, there are five practices teams and organisations and places and communities and ecosystems can adopt to thrive.

And it turns out that most thriving systems are doing this already:

1. honest, constructive, productive conversations — taking emotions and perspective seriously, sharing assumptions and logic, making the undiscussable discussable

2. clarity — of role, strategy, vision, task, project, programme, relationships

3. learning — how to do things better, how to rethink our perspectives, and maybe even how to change our understanding of our own identity

4. culture — creating the conditions for people to really commit and thrive.

First, understand that this is determined by our gut emotional reactions to the behaviours of leaders, to the experiences we have of the organisation, and to the use of symbolism, and the stories we tell about all those things.

Then, the people who have the ability to shape these things take responsibility for doing so.

5. good and clear intent — measuring whether we’re actually doing what matters and creating value in the world.

__

The first three — conversations, clarity, and learning — create a learning, adaptive system.

The final two — culture and intent — create a self-adjusting, directional system.

There’s plenty more to think about in organisational life, but I find that these five things are fundamental. If you have work to do on them, you’ll probably benefit from doing it.

Thanks to Pierre E. NEIS, my colleague in the Open Eyes Collaborative, for having me on his podcast to share!
