Mm, maybe. But if you say that the notion of purpose arguably does not belong or apply (as I think Bateson /pere/ did, powerfully), then, surely, the notion of waste (and the notion of recycling) doesn’t make sense either? Either that, or there is *tremendous* waste in ecosystems! Waste of acorns, nuts, sperm, eggs, babies, effort, intent, waste of energy, dinosaurs as fossils and fossil fuel, the dead bodies of corals and the sacrificing parts of the slime mould etc etc. Waste due to mega volcanoes and asteroids :-)

Waste arises from a local situated definition of purpose or something, and you only get the recycling by changing the definition…
